Bona Vista is a substantial single story Victorian [sparrow picked sandstone] cottage with a slate roof, set in mature gardens with a group of timber slab barns at the rear. The home has six rooms in the main building and extra rooms for the outbuilding at the rear. A bell caste rolled iron verandah surrounds the main home. Wrought iron decorative panels and columns enhance the verandah.

Construction commenced in 1888 and was completed in 1889. The house is in very good condition with all woodwork made of Australian red cedar. Unique timber slab barns (4) with corrugated iron roofs built between (1841-1890) provide an authentic Australian heritage backdrop to the homestead, surrounded by landscaped gardens and cottage gardens.

These barns are rare due to the effect of time and the elements on their timber construction.
In March 2000 a Schedule of Repair and Maintenance Works was commenced retaining as much as possible of the original fabric. A new barn has recently been constructed in keeping with the original style. Post and rail fences surround an early cattle yard. Old machinery resides in these buildings. The site has been in continuous ownership by the same family for five generations.

There are many sandstone buildings in Pitt Town which is one of the five Macquarie Towns of the Hawkesbury designated in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The fertile river land close to the banks of the Hawkesbury River was farmed as early as 1794.
